Welcome to Painted Cave Literary Journal

Welcome to Painted Cave’s Inaugural Issue

Painted Cave is a literary journal established by the creative writing students at Santa Barbara City College. Our goal is to highlight contemporary and emerging writers enrolled in community colleges across the nation by presenting their work in an online biannual magazine in May and November.

Within these pages are the work of twenty-four writers representing community colleges from eight states: Arizona, California, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Virginia. We are pleased with the quality of the submissions, reaffirming that creative writers thrive at community colleges.

We share Anne Lamott’s view: “Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul” (Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life).

Our thanks to all who generously submitted their creations, making our job as editors difficult though exciting.

  3. “Time doesn’t move hour to hour, but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.”

I felt the cool sand as I walk to the edge of the water overlooking the horizon. I enjoy laying in my chair relaxing with my toes in the water. I admire the cool breeze in my hair as the sun bakes my skin. The smell of the salt water warms my heart. It amazes me when I see dolphin fins gliding down the water. I hear so many people yelling and having a cheerful time. Vacation is all about fun. I had so much fun parasailing, jet skiing, and kayaking. Every evening my family and I got dressed up and went to dinner. The good thing about vacation is I get my favorite food fresh, crab legs has always been my favorite. There’s so many things to do on vacation rather than home. We went putt putting and explored Florida. At the course we chose to go putt putting at had 92 baby alligators! You could feed the alligators, but not get too close. It was sad for the time in Florida to come to an end, we spent 25 days in Florida and it was the best vacation I have ever had. Florida is a home away from home for me, it’s nice to get away but still be so close with family and great friends. I am so thankful I get the opportunities to enjoy vacations like this with my family in our Florida home.
